You were charged. What you do first matters.

Charges carry consequences beyond the courtroom — licences, employment, immigration status and travel. Early decisions affect all of them.

What to do now

  1. Exercise your right to counsel and say nothing further about the allegation.
  2. Record your release conditions and follow them precisely.
  3. Note every court date; missing one can create a further charge.
  4. Preserve anything relevant — messages, receipts, records placing you elsewhere.
  5. Speak to defence counsel before your first appearance.

What to bring to your lawyer

  • The information, summons or release documents
  • Any disclosure already received
  • Your driver's licence and any licence-related notices
  • Contact information for witnesses
